Religion in Early Modern Societies
-The early modern era gave birth to two cultural trends, the first being the spread of christianity to asians, africans and native americans and the second was the emergence of a modern scientific outlook that challenged western christianity
-science and religion was the new cultural encounter
-Science was a new world view and for some, became almost a new religion

The Globalization of Christianity
-Christianity was largely limited to europe in the beginning of the modern era and in 1500 stretched from spain and england in the west to russia in the east
-Christian world was divided between roman Catholics of western and central europe and eastern orthodox of eastern europe and russia
-Reformation of the Catholic church to Protestant began in 1517 when a document was issued known as the "95 theses" which publicly invited a debate about various abuses within the church.
-Protestant idea was that all vocations were of equal merit. Common people used this to show their opposition to social order

Birth of modern science
-Intellectual and cultural transformations took place between the mid 16th century and the early 18th century
-Men of science would no longer rely on authority of the bible or the church but knowledge to them would be acquired rationally based on evidence alone
-This revolution altered ideas about humankind and challenged both teachings and authority of the church .
-also challenged social hierarchies and political systems
-by the 20th century science had become so widespread that it largely lost its association with european culture and became the chief maker of global modernity
-initial break through came from polish astronomer who argued that at the middle of all things lies the sun;thus earth was no longer the center of gods universe


Enlightenment
-Mans emergence form his self imposed inability to use ones understandings without anothers guidance
-much of enlightenment thinking was directed against superstition ignorance and corruption of religion
-enlightenment brought about the question of woman's nature and their role in society and the education most appropriate for them
-enlightenment was influenced by the growing global awareness of its major thinkers.
-the central theme, and what made it so revolutionary was the idea of progress
-Various forms of enlightenment religion arose in the early modern century and reflected the influence of enlightenment thinkers
-despite the challenge of religion it persisted and adapted for many others
