Chapter 14 second half

Early modern commerce in people
-Atlantic slave trade had the most profound consequences
-Between 1500-1866 the trade in human beings took about 12.5 million people from African societies and shipped them across the atlantic middle passage bringing them to america where they lived their brief lives as slaves.
-Within Africa, that commerce disrupted societies and strengthened others and even corrupted some. Elites enriched themselves while slaves were victimized beyond imagination.
-The profits of the slave trade enriched mostly european and euro american societies.
-New world slavery was largely based on plantation agriculture for colonial america.
-The origins of atlantic slavery lie in the mediterranean world with as common sweetener known as sugar.
-Europeans knew nothing of sugar and relied on honey to sweeten bland diets.
-African american slaves were used due to their immunity to many diseases
-slave trade slowed Africa's growth in a time when other nations were expanding.
-Almost no one in africa benefited from the slave trade
-Socially the slave trade shaped african societies and differed from place to place over time.
-African women felt the impact of trade, and were shipped in larger numbers to the americas where some were forced to marry.

Overall, I was surprised to learn how complex and long lasting slavery was. I was unaware that african Americans were not the only kind of slaves. I also found it hard to understand how even those who were slaves were able to have roles in societies as mentioned in the book. When reading about Abyuba Suleiman Diallo, I was saddened to hear the stories he had gone through, having to run out into the forest to pray only to get dirt thrown into his face from a young white boy. This could have been the best thing to happen to him though because it caused him to run away where he was of interest when captured and able to gain a better life because of the things that happened and the people who were there to help him. Sadly, I don't think many stories like this exist and its sad to think of how many people went through such hard times.

1. These objects showed social status of each person. Pepper was for the elite Romans and chinese while silk showed position and ranking within a society.
2. Men and women show different roles depending on their gender. JUst like in the 50s, women seemed to be in charge of caring for kids, preparing foods and taking care of the house. They were not allowed to do a lot which is why they may be absent in the visuals.
3. These images support that trade was well thought out with each person and gender being only responsible for tasks they were good and fast at.
4. This shows that culture was more seen as a religion

5. Although trade brought people together it tore people apart by segregating them based on color and class and not allowing them to do things others were allowed to do. No matter how much it helped the economy, I think it was overall a bad idea.
